Chapter Nine

From the Horn of Moon came "Kevin from Heaven"

During most of the early years in Buch Spieler's history, before we had our own restroom in the store, I would go across the street and down the block to the Horn of the Moon Café for relief. I also ate there regularly because I had a trade agreement with the owner of the Horn - food for music. Unfortunately, the Horn is no longer there but that is another story. Lucky for me, though, was meeting Kevin who was a cook at the Horn. This was sometime around 1990.

Kevin Brown is a man of many talents - among them musician, writer, husband, father, long-distance runner, and cook. He has an encyclopedic memory of musical facts as well as all kinds of other facts too numerous for me to remember and he is one-hell-of-a nice guy. You would be hard pressed to meet a better man.

While I sat at the counter of the Horn of the Moon Café eating breakfast, as was my habit, I could listen to the conversations of the wait-staff and cooks because of the café's open kitchen configuration. I knew that Kevin was a good cook but I could tell that he was a better musician's musician. There was a job opening at Buch Spieler and I offered the position to Kevin. The rest is, as they say, history.

It's now 2004 and Kevin is still here. One could not ask for a more loyal comrade in the trials and tribulations of operating a retail business. It is with heartfelt fondness and respect that I say Buch Spieler would not be here today without "Kevin from Heaven".
